ColorofChange.org launches LaVena petition

The online grassroots organization ColorofChange.org, a black advocacy group founded in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, has lent its support to the family of LaVena Johnson. The group has launched a new petition addressed to the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and its chairman, Representative Henry Waxman. From the petition page:

Justice for LaVena Johnson
Tell Congressman Waxman to investigate the Army's cover up of Pfc LaVena Johnson's murder.
While overwhelming evidence shows that LaVena Johnson was raped and murdered while serving in Iraq, the US Army refuses to acknowledge the crime and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Join the Johnson family's call for Congressman Waxman to hold a Congressional hearing that uncovers the truth behind LaVena's tragic death.

ColorofChange.org is perhaps most widely known for its advocacy on behalf of the Jena Six - young African-American men facing racial bias and inflated charges of murder in Jena, LA.

From the organization's "About Us" page:

ColorOfChange.org is comprised of Black folks from every economic class, as well as those of every color who seek to help our voices be heard. Our members are united behind a simple, powerful pledge: we will do all we can to make sure all Americans are represented, served, and protected—regardless of race or class.

I ask everyone to join the voices represented by the ColorofChange petition to Rep. Waxman, and to share the word with others.

This is the time!

I definitely signed.

My petition has thus far collected over 1500 signatures with a new goal of 3000.

With all of us working together, our common goal of justice and truth will be met.

Thanks for the update.

In light and love

Danielle

That's excellent, Danielle! I am not surprised that you had to adjust your goal upward. :-)

I will be adding a permanent link to the ColorofChange petition and your own sometime this week, probably in the upper left area of the site.

I just saw LaVena's parents on Democracy Now and I am absolutely outraged by this story. There has got to be an independent investigation of this horrifying event. We must bring these perpetrators to pay for their actions. We also in must protect and support our women service members from rape and murder.
I listened to the senate hearing on gays in the military today and I am sitting here thinking that it is not good soldiers who happen to be gay that we have to worry about. It is perverted heterosexuals that the army has to deal with in a real way. I just saw LaVena's parents on Democracy Now and I am absolutely outraged by this story. I just finishe watching the tragic story of Lavena on democracynow.org.I must state my dissapointment upon hearing Mr Johnson praising the virtues of that poor excuse for a man named henry Waxman. If the Tillman family could not get a serious investigation into the death of their son, what makes Mr Johnson think he will fare any better. The only chance in hell he satnds to get some justice for his daughter is to shame these so called Democrats. The next time he is asked a question about Mr waxman,he should say that judging from his recent behavior,Mr Johnson is hoping for the best but he is not holding his breath. If asked to elaborate,he should name all the previous meaningless hearings that mr Waxamn has held with no real closure. He may not get the justice for lavena that he seeks but,he will do some good for America and the world

Thank you so much for bringing this issue to light. I had no idea about it. I am a huge supporter of our troops, but this situation is just horribly wrong, and I am praying for justice for Pfc. LaVena Johnson and her family.
